Oh Those Ears

There are many things I love about Zack but his ears are so perfect. They fold just so, flap in the wind and are so soft like velvet. He is too cute from every angle, even from behind :)

Two Days......

It is only two days until Zack's first Rally Obedience trial at Spruce Meadows in Calgary. Neither of us have ever done a Rally trial in our lives so it should be a good experience hopefully. We have prepared but are not quite prepared if that makes any sense. I am getting a little nervous now and the unknown is giving me butterflies. I hope I don't pass any of my uneasiness onto Zack. I am sure we will have a great weekend and meet some great friends both two legged and four legged. We shall see.....

In the meantime I have been on holidays this week so Zack and I have been having lots of play time. I just love his funny ways and personality he is such a character and I can't imagine my life without him.

Zack is Back

Pete and I left last Friday and went to Kimberley BC for a few days to get away for a holiday and also visit with Pete's family. It was a great vacation.

Zack stayed in Lethbridge with his BFF Dylan. I understand Zack was very well behaved while we were away which was great news as he is a busy little guy. He got lots of walks, love, treats and was spoiled rotten I am sure the days he was there. I thought I would post a picture of my husband Pete, Zack, Dylan and I that was taken not too long ago.

It was lovely to get away but I am glad to be home and glad Zack is back. Asia (aka Fat Cat) ran to Zack as he came in the front door this afternoon and proceeded to check him out all over - I think she missed him too!!! It was so cute.

The Glad Man

It's funny how such a simple thing as a cardboard box can be the best thing ever to a 20 pound terrier!!!

Awesome Morning

I was up with the larks this morning and decided to take Zack for a long walk because it was so nice and cool. We went a different route as the city has sprayed all the parks with pesticide so we went "cross country". We crossed the fields near our house and whatever new trail I found I took. Zack had a blast tearing round. He played Kangaroo for a while bouncing up and down in the long grass so he could see where he was going. Then he would stop and stand on his hind legs like a grizzly bear and scan the horizon. It was hilarious. Finally he realized it was much easier to stick to the trail and trot along with me.

I kept a vigilent eye out for coyotes and luckily did not see one today. On we went across and through Paradise Canyon neighbourhood. As I was meandering my way through the subdivision I noticed another "dirt path" at the edge of this farmers field. I decided to take it. It was aways aways from the road and it looked like it was headed to Popson area. I let Zack off leash again and he was in his glory. He found a dugout so of course he had to get his feet wet and muddy and then plant them on my legs to show me what he found. He was so happy ahahah.

A little ways down the path I just happened to look up and about 50 feet to my left was this huge, stag deer with a giant set of antlers just staring at me. We actually made eye contact that's how close we were. I don't know where he came from. I was in awe. He was gorgeous. I had never been so close to a wild male deer in my life. I then realized it may not be the safest thing so I quickly grabbed Zack and put him back on his leash (Zack couldn't see the deer because the crop was so high - thank god). I don't know why but I still just stood there looking instead of leaving. I don't know how anyone could shoot such a beautiful animal. I see deer all the time in Lethbridge and never get tired of them but a male one that big is a rarity. I will cherish the moment forever. Then it was as though the deer and myself acknowledged each other and then just went our separate ways. Amazing. I get chills just thinking about it. I am such an animal lover so these moments in life make life worth living.

Zack was oblivious to the whole goings on with the deer which was for the best as he probably would have started barking and all hell would have broken loose.

It makes me realize that without Zack in my life I would never go the places I go or see the things I see. Dogs truly are a blessing.

I am going to make a cup of tea now and have breakfast on the patio with Zacky boy. What an awesome morning.

An Off Night

Tonight was our first rally obedience practice in about 2 weeks and both Zack and I both had an off night. Maybe it was my nerves tonight that Zack picked up on as our first trial is not far away now. He was soooo "not with me" and didn't even seem to want his usual rollover treats, however, Amanda's "new" treats seemed quite tasty to him. Hmmmmmm.... is he playing with me?

On the flip side, Zack did do some great stationary sits, downs, etc. He even did a stand stay which I was really thrilled with. It is his heeling I have trouble with. I try to keep upbeat and coax him on but tonight he just didn't feel like doing it. I guess I must remember too I have a terrier who are independent thinkers and when they don't feel like doing something they just don't do it.

My other concern was whether Zack was feeling "a little off" tonight as he was unusually quiet. I will keep my eye on him. Zack does have occasional health issues and I am so vigilent about signs of a bout coming on. Fingers crossed it is nothing.

Our first rally obedience trial is in two weeks and I am both excited and anxious about it. I just have to remember to have fun - that's what it is all about - especially for Zack. I want him to have a blast and enjoy all the doggy hoopla.

Home Boy

After being away for a long weekend I think Zack was glad to get back home and catch up on some zzzzzzz's. After a good rest it was back to routine today tho and off to doggy daycare for the afternoon. I don't think Zack minded too much - he has to catch up with his doggy pals you know - ahahaha.

This evening he hung out in the yard with me while I weeded.

played with his toys....

and found a new favourite game of "follow the stick".

Missoula Marathon

This weekend we went to Missoula, Montana for a marathon that my husband Pete and his friend Martin ran in and completed in 30 degree weather! Blimy. Amazing.

Dylan watched and waited for Martin to go by and Zack waited in the shade. It was so bloody hot.

Here's Pete on his way to the finish line!

Whoo hoo, way to go guys!!!!

On the way back we stopped at a lovely spot to have our lunch.

I will blog more about our weekend in another post.

Crossed Legs

Every lunch hour I come home to spend time with Zack and let him out for a pee, etc. etc. Yesterday did not go quite to plan. I was driving my husband's old truck (as mine was in the shop) and decided to run a quick errand, stop for a subway sandwich and then head home for Zack. When I got home, Zack was standing in the window beside our front door doing his usual enthusiastic wiggle and leap wiggle and leap when I realized I don't have a key to the front door as I have my husband's keys. I had left my keys at the shop with my other car. Crikey (actually I was saying much worse than that by this time!!) I quickly rang Pete but he didn't have a spare key, all this time Zack was just so anxious as he could see me but I wasn't coming in to let him out. He had started to whine a bit so I went back in the truck out of view and started on my way back to the dealership to get my house key from my other car that was being fixed.

On the way over there I realized I must have left my subway sandwich on the front doorstep or something as I couldn't see it. Typical. Then while driving the old truck round scenic drive the knob on the gear shift popped off, what the f***!! I panicked then stalled the truck in the middle of traffic. I then realized I could drive the funny stick thingy with no knob so on I went shifting gears with a stick!! By the time I got there and stopped the truck I was able to pop the knob back on, got out of the truck - and hey, there was my subway sandwich. I had sat on it all this time. It was as flat as a pancake, all warm and squished. My big ass makes a perfect panini press that's for sure!!

I quickly grabbed my keys and drove home and finally was able to let poor Zacky out who peed like a race horse. Poor thing. I was only able to spend 5 minutes with him as I had to get back to work. Crikey what a lunch hour.

Luckily today I have my car back and Zack is off to daycare this afternoon.

Fishing Trip

Today we went to Police Lake Provincial Park with our boat for a day of fishing and Zack of course came along too. He is getting used to the boat now and has found his "sea legs".

It's a beautiful spot out there and Big Chief Mountain is always in view.

Later in the morning we met up with Pete's friends on the lake. They had a cute little 4 month old American Eskimo pup but she didn't think much of Zack she was a feisty little thing and was ready to see Zack off.

How could she not love this little face?

I saw my first ever loon in the wild today. Two of them swam right past our boat and made that haunting noise as they went by. It was awesome, although I had to quickly grab Zack's life jacket handle as he was ready to leap overboard to get them!!! Crikey!!

Zack definitely takes every sight and sound in when we are out fishing.

Which makes for a tired puppy.

He "conked out" immediately once we got in the truck to head home.

As I am typing this blog I feel I am still bobbing up and down as though I was still on the water!!! Bit queezy actually. LOL! I wonder if Zack feels the same way?

Bark in the Park

Today was a fundraiser for Windy City Canine Rescue in Lethbridge.

The demos were great. The agility dogs caught Zack's eye as they went by. There was also frisbee, carting and tracking demos. Fun fun fun.

Zack said hello to lots of new dogs and all in all it was a great dog day in the park. To top it off we won a new dog crate in the raffle. Brilliant!!!! It was very well organized and hopefully lots of money was raised for the Rescue and that the dogs up for adoption found new homes.

Tomorrow Pete, Zack and I are off fishing in our boat at Police Lake. Hopefully the weather holds out and we have a nice day.
